FINRA Series 65 License

ByDividend Investing Team May 2, 2024May 2, 2024

What is a FINRA Series 65 License?

The Series 65 license, also known as the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, is a requirement for individuals aiming to act as investment advisers.

To obtain this certification, one must pass a comprehensive exam that assesses one’s understanding of financial planning, laws, regulations, and ethics. We consider this license crucial for professionals who provide broad financial advice to clients.

Holding a Series 65 license allows us to offer clients advice on securities and to manage their investment portfolios.

Unlike the Series 7 license, it does not allow for the buying or selling of securities, nor does it require sponsorship by a member firm. Therefore, it is often the choice for advisers who do not engage in securities transactions.

Here’s a brief look at the key areas covered by the Series 65 exam:

Subject AreaImportance
Laws, Regulations, and EthicsFor ensuring compliance and ethical behavior in financial advice
Investment Vehicle CharacteristicsUnderstanding the features of different types of investments
Client Investment Recommendations and StrategiesCreating suitable investment strategies for clients

The exam covers a multitude of topics within these areas, and it is essential for us to be proficient in each one to provide reliable advice. As a team, we continue to educate ourselves to maintain our knowledge and stay current with evolving regulations and financial practices.
